Prognosis
The mortality in patients with Necrotizing Fasciitis has ranged from 20% to as high as 80%. Survivability depends on on various factors such as pathogens, patient characteristics, infection site, and speed of treatment. Poor prognosis has been linked to infection with certain streptococcal strains (Medscape Reference).
Better survival rate of the patients was attributed to aggressive wound care, broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics, as well as aggressive surgical debridement. A patient could have as much as ten different surgical incisions until the infection is total rid from the body, it all depends on the infection site (Medscape Reference).
In a study b y Rouse et al, the overall mortality rate was 73%. The statistics showed that prompt recognition and treatment of Necrotizing Fasciitis was vital: Of 12 patients whose treatment was delayed for more than 12 hours, 11 patients died. Early debridement of the infection was obviously associated with a significant decrease in mortality (Medscape Reference).
